welcome to the PTL family

Play To Learn Therapy focuses on providing our children with the tools needed to achieve success within their natural environments through the use of occupational therapy services.

A child's primary goal is to grow, learn and play, with one of their main occupations being play. Through the use of play and other therapeutic techniques, Play To Learn Therapy promotes the development of motor planning skills, fine motor skills, visual motor/visual perceptual skills, sensory processing, emotional maturity, social skills, and self-confidence needed to discover and explore new environments.

We offer personalized occupational therapy services to help families and children reach their goals. We are currently only in-network Tricare insurance, but can provide super bills for clients to submit for out of network reimbursement. We currently have no waitlist and you can get your child on their way to success today!

Joana Pernia

occupational therapist

Joana completed her B.S. in Psychology at the University of Central Florida, followed by her Doctoral degree in occupational therapy at the University of Florida in 2022.

During her time at UF, Joana completed her Doctoral Capstone project with a concentration on religious participation of people with disabilities and their caregivers. Additionally, she was able to implement evidence-based school programs and present to parents and teachers on the topic of sensory processing at the associated parochial school.

Following her time at UF, Joana began work in outpatient pediatric services before moving to the city of St. Augustine, where Joana would gain experience with school-based practice at Flagler County Schools. Joana has had hands-on experience with clients and students with ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, learning disorders, cerebral palsy, global developmental delay, sensory processing disorder, Down Syndrome, and more.

Her experience in the school system gave Joana a passion for delivering services in an embedded setting, embracing the natural contexts and environments her clients find themselves in. Her time in the school system also increased her advocacy skills to uphold not just the dignity and well-being of her students, but also the values and scope of occupational therapy practice to the rest of the IEP team.

As a mother of two young boys, Joana knows what it means to want the best for your child. She knows how much it means to caregivers to have all the resources and support available to help their child grow and thrive. She places importance on embracing neurodiversity and embracing her clients for the unique and unrepeatable gift that they are, using a strengths-based sensory approach to encourage and uplift her clients to achieve participation in meaningful daily life activities for overall health and well-being in children of all ages.
